Meet our Animal of the Month

Lion Country Safari's Cupid

Meet Cupid, the giraffe! He will celebrate his third birthday at Lion Country Safari this Valentine's Day, February 14, 2008. Cupid's name is very fitting as Lion Country Safari has high hopes for him as a future breeder. Visitors can meet Cupid at the giraffe feeding exhibit where he eagerly interacts with visitors. Cupid also has a heart-shaped spot which distinguishes him.

Giraffes are the tallest of all animals, and can reach heights of 17 feet. With keen senses of smell, sight, and hearing, giraffes are well equipped to sense danger approaching. Its long legs, neck, and 15-inch tongue allow the giraffe to reach the tender leaves of the tallest acacia trees. Despite the length of its neck, a giraffe still only has seven vertebrae in its neck -- the same number as most other mammals. Giraffe horns are unlike those of any other mammal: they are covered with skin.
