AFRICAN
LION (Species
Fact Sheet)
Lions are distributed through much of Africa, south of the Sahara desert.
Four feet high at the shoulder, up to 8 feet in length and weighing up
to 550 lbs, they are the largest of the African carnivores. Lions live
in family groups called prides which are usually made up of a core of
related females and their offspring. One to five adult males dominate
and protect the pride. The lion's roar is a way of communicating and may
be audible up to 5 miles away. Here at Lion Country Safari, our lions
are kept in their very own preserve for an obvious reason: they are, after
all, excellent hunters, and many of our other animal residents are the
lion's natural prey.
