BEAR SCOUT: Elective 15: Soil & Water Conservation

Note: Lion Country Safari's badge workshop will help your Scout group
prepare for earning a badge. The following list will help you to understand
what Lion Country Safari covers, and what the Scout and/or group will need
to do to complete the badge requirements. All badge workshops must be
arranged in advance.


Note: Each letter counts toward arrow points (10 needed for each arrow point).
All 5 letters in Elective 15 must be earned as part of the World Conservation Award.
At Lion Country Safari
(during your badge workshop)
Scouts need to do on their own
(or as a Den activity)
15 A: See a soil sample and learn about different layers of
soil. Describe different layers of soil.
15 B: Set up soil experiment for 3 different kinds of earth.
Do the soil experiment.
15 C: Learn about forest fires and replanting efforts.
15 D: Learn about erosion and the importance of plants
protecting soil from wind and rain. Learn what kind of
grasses and plants help in S. Florida.
15 E: Talk about water pollution. How does water get
polluted?
· Sewage disposal
· Industrial chemicals
· Soil run-off
· Pesticides from farm run-off
· Oil spills
15 C: Visit a burned-out forest. Find out how the area will
grow back.
15 E: Do a den project at the beach or other waterway to
help clean up the environment.
