Day Camp 2002 - Week 1
At Safari Day Camp has been lots of fun! New this year is we do crafts indoors under the direction of Ms. Linda, the crafts director. As always, each group swam for an hour each day at our KOA pool (weather permitting), and we visited the petting zoo, mini golf, paddle boats, Safari Queen, and gift
shop on day each.

Zebra
Zebra
On Zebra Day, we drove through the preserve and observed the zebras very
carefully. Did you know that each zebra has a different stripe pattern? We each tried to draw the stripe pattern of our favorite zebra. We also worked on making a paper-mache zebra, which the lion keepers put out Thursday morning as enrichment for the lions. Sephina and her sister, Nyika, ran straight toward the top of the zebra and stayed there for an hour, according to lion keeper Brian. One of the 2-year-old cubs, Rhumba, pulled the tail off and rolled around in the grass with it. Her two brothers, Tsavo and Jambo, weren't very interested; they ran off to play with a ball instead. The event was broadcast on Channel 5 TV during the 6:00 p.m. newscast.

Spoonbill Spoonbill

Spoonbill
On Spoonbill day, we went into the spoonbill aviary and learned how this bird uses its spoon-shaped bill and other interesting bits of information from the bird keepers. We also made a spoonbill craft and played Spoonbill relay.

Tortoise
Tortoise
For Tortoise day, we helped prepare the diets for our Aldabra tortoises, and we were the speial guests at the 2:00 p.m. Tortoise Talk. Of course, we also made tortoise crafts and played a tortoise game

Hoofstock Keeper
Hoofstock Keeper
Hoofstock Keeper day taught us what duties that keepers have who work with hooved animals. Jen, Ashleigh, and Mark told us the kind of education that is required (college degree) and the best and worst part of the job. The best part for us was when we went up to the giraffe night feeder and fed Mort, a hand-raised giraffe who seems to enjoy kids!

South America
South America
South America is home to a wide variety of animals from various habitats; this is one of the things we learned on this day. We toured the preserve, looking for animals from South America, then we went on a scavenger hunt through Safari World to answer clues about more of these animals. We created special crafts from this continent, and we attended a show at the animal Theatre that featured animals from South America.
