| Day Camp 2002 - Week 5 | |
For Rhino day, we met one of the rhino keepers at the night quarters, and he told us all about these endangered animals and about Lion Country Safari's involvement in the SSP program. We also observed them being released into the preserve. |
We met Aaron or Joe from Education, who told us all about CiCi (the sulfur-crested cockatoo) and Casper (the umbrella cockatoo). We then met the bird keeper, who instructed us how to make enrichments for all of the parrots. Later on, we candled eggs with the Education staff, and even held the baby chicks! |
Wildlife Director Terry or Assistant Curator Sherri took Elizabeth the Burmese python out of her exhibit and measured and weighed her. She weighed almost 120 pounds, and is 14 feet, 8 inches long. We then met up with Aaron or Joe, who told us all about the ball python, and we had our pictures taken with Julius Squeezer. |
Dr. Rose and two vet techs met us at the Animal Theatre. They showed us how they take an x-ray of a parrot, trim the hooves of a Dall's sheep, and dart animals. We then met Marsha, the registrar, at her office. We found out how important it is to keep accurate records on all the animals, and how each one is identified. |

Did you know that spiders aren't insects? And do you know how they build their webs? We learned about these interesting creatures, then went on a nature hike to look for some in the wild. At craft time, we made our own spiders to take home. |
