| Day Camp 2003 - Week 4 | |
This week's mammal day was extra-special because we were able to feed the giraffe! We met one of the hoofstock keepers, who told us all about these fascinating 4-legged creatures. For instance, did you know that a giraffe has a prehensile tongue? Did you know that each one only has 7 vertebrae in their neck - the same number as a human? Some of us also had our picture taken with Mort! |
After we made enrichments for Lion Country Safari's parrots, we met with a member of the education department, who introduced us to the macaws that call Lion Country home. There are 3 scarlets, 5 blue & golds, 1 green wing, and 1 military. Almost half of these parrots were born at Lion Country; all were born in captivity. |
We met the Education staff at the Animal Theatre in the morning to learn all about the baby alligator, Ike. Some of us even had our photo taken with the little guy! And then, we were able to feed the big ones during the 3:00 p.m. Alligator Chit-Chat. |
First, we met with a member of the education staff and made a variety of enrichments. Then we took our enrichments and met with a primate keeper (they take care of the monkeys and apes), they taught us all about Lion Country's primates, which include 2 species of monkeys and 3 species of apes. |
We learned that different animals leave different footprints in the sand, snow, or dirt where they live. We went to one of the animal holding barns and met with Brian, one of the wildlife keepers. He showed us how to use plaster to make copies of animal tracks, and we all got to make one. We also got to make tracks during craft time with model magic. |
