Day Camp 2003 - Week 7

Elephant Elephant

Elephant
In the morning we got to make bamboo rafts as enrichments for the elephants, which we took out to elephant island. We got to met one of the pachyderm keepers. Terry Wolf, Wildlife Manager told us all about these endangered animals. We even got to see the elephant keepers push our rafts into the water with some hay and treats on them. The elephants seemed to love the rafts, they even ate the bamboo.

Flamingo Flamingo

Flamingo
Did you know that Lion Country Safari has two species of Flamingo? And only one female Flamingo? We learned how to tell which one is the girl (hint: you can't tell just by looking at her natural features). We then tried to draw some of them.

Python Python

Python
Wildlife Director Terry Wolf took Elizabeth, the Burmese python, out of her exhibit and measured and weighed her. She weighed about 125 pounds, and measured about 14 feet, 8 inches long. Terry told us all about Elizabeth, then we met up with Aaron or Joe, who told us all about the ball python, and we had our pictures taken with Julius Squeezer.

Animal Theater
Animal Theater
What's it like to stand up on stage and tell the public about conservation? We learned this firsthand when we helped the Education staff with the 1:00 p.m. presentation. We made up our own jingle or song to tell people how important the rainforests are. We learned that we should get a B.A. or B.S. in Education, Biology, or a related field if we'd like to do this for a living.

Hedgehog
Africa
Lion Country Safari has many different species of animals from Africa. We drove through the preserve to try to identify as many as possible, and then we did a scavenger hunt in Safari World to learn more about African animals. We also got to have our picture taken with the African Pygmy Hedgehog.
