Zebra
We drove through the preserve, looking at the zebra. We discovered that each zebra has its own stripe pattern, just like people have unique fingerprints. Some of us helped to make a paper-mache zebra. Everyone watched on Thursday morning as the lions were released and ran over and attacked the paper zebra! It was down in about 1 second! But then they spent a lot of time tearing it apart and carrying off parts, such as a mailing-tube leg. Of course, we also made a zebra in craft time, and played zebra ball. |

Spoonbill
We met a wildlife staff member, who passed out various feathers from the different birds in the Spoonbill exhibit. We had to figure out which feather belonged to which bird. Then we learned all about these pink birds with unusual beaks. At craft time, we made our own spoonbill birds, and we played a spoonbill game, too. |

Tortoise
We met the commissary keeper in the morning, and helped to prepare the diets for the tortoises. Then, we were the special guests at the 2:00 Aldabra Tortoise Talk. We even got the chance to pat Redman, one of the Aldabra tortoises. At craft time, we made a tortoise craft, and we also played a tortoise-themed game. |
|
Hoofstock Keeper
This was one of the highlights of the week. We met a wildlife staff member at the giraffe night pen, where we met Mort, the third oldest giraffe in the U.S. After learning all about giraffe, we were able to feed Mort and have our picture taken. After Mort joined the other giraffe on the preserve, we went into the night pen and collected giraffe hair. We made a giraffe craft and played a giraffe game, too. |
|
South America
We drove onto the preserve, looking for animals that live in South America. Later, we were able to meet a couple of South American animals with an education staff member. We made a South American craft and played a game with that same theme. |
