Antelope
We met with one of the Hoofstock Keepers, who told us all about the many species of antelope that call Lion Country Safari home. We learned that antelope have horns, not antlers, and we even got to see and feel real antelope horns and deer antlers. We also walked around a bit to learn to identify various tracks and scat, and the keeper took us on a guided tour to learn more about these fascinating animals. Some of us even made some paper mache antelope as an enrichment for the Lions. |

Lory
For this week's Bird day, we visited the Lory Encounter, where a member of the Wildlife department told us all about these colorful, friendly birds that live in Australia and the surrounding islands. They climbed all over our hats and arms. We learned that they like to play with hats, sunglasses, hair scrunchies, etc. We got to feed them, and some of us had our pictures taken with them! |
|
Python
Wildlife Director Terry Wolf took Elizabeth, the Burmese python, out of her exhibit and measured and weighed her. She weighed about 125 pounds, and measured about 14 feet, 10 inches long. Terry told us all about Elizabeth, and answered any questions we had about snakes. |
|
Reptile Keeper
We met up with a member of the wildlife staff. They taught us how to prepare iguana diets. We got to watch the reptiles eat the food we helped to prepare. We also watched Redman, the aldabra tortoise, get a bath, and we looked inside his house. |

Insects
Throughout the week we were able to watch some catepillars change into butterflies and some ladybug larva become ladybugs. We played some games that focused on insects and learned about the life cycle of different types of insects. Some of us even went on a walk around the KOA to find some insects of our own. |
