Day Camp 2005 - Week 1

Zebra
Zebra
We drove through the preserve, looking at the zebra. We discovered that each zebra has its own stripe pattern, just like people have unique fingerprints. Some of us helped to make a paper-mache zebra. Everyone watched on Thursday morning as the lions were released and ran over and attacked the paper zebra! It was down in about 1 second! But then they spent a lot of time tearing it apart and carrying off parts, such as a mailing-tube leg. Of course, we also made a zebra in craft time, and played zebra ball. We also got to meet with one of the Zebra keepers and they told us all about the Zebra.

Toucan
Toucan
We met with the Bird Keeper in front of the Toucan exhibit. They told us all about toucans and we were even able to make some enrichments which the toucans received while we were there.

Skink
Skink
An Education staff member brought out Clymer, the Solomon Island prehensile-tailed skink, and we were even able to hold her for a photo! We learned all about this largest of skink species and came away with a greater appreciation for reptiles. We also made skinks in craft and played a game about reptiles.

Primate Keeper Chimp Crossing

Primate Keeper
First, we met with a member of the education staff and made a variety of enrichments. Then we took our enrichments and met with a primate keeper (they take care of the monkeys and apes), they taught us all about Lion Country's primates, which include 2 species of monkeys and 3 species of apes.

Florida FLorida

Florida
We met with one of the education staff in the animal theater and got to learn all about Florida. We got to learn some really cool stuff about the American Alligator and the Florida Kingsnake.
