Rhino
We met one of the keepers at the rhino night quarters (where the white rhinoceroses stay at night) and learned all about this endangered species. For instance, the rhino's horn is made of keratin, which is also in our hair and fingernails. We watched the rhinos come out onto the preserve and begin to graze. At craft time, we made a rhino to take home. |

Cockatoo
An education staff member led us in making enrichments for all the parrots. Then, we took the enrichments with us to meet another education staff member who showed us CiCi the sulfur-crested cockatoo. Some of us even had our picture taken with him. We then watched CiCi and Casper (the umbrella cockatoo) interact with their enrichments. Next, we went to the petting zoo barn and candled eggs and held the baby chicks. We made a cockatoo craft to take home. |
|
Tortoise
One of the keepers showed us how to make up the diets for the Aldabra tortoises, and some of us had our photo taken with one of the baby red-footed tortoises. We met Redman, the Aldabra tortoise, at the afternoon tortoise talk. And we made our own tortoise during craft time. |
|
Vet Keeper
The veterinarian and the vet techs met us at the Animal Theatre and showed us how they take care of the animals, including listening to the heart beat, taking the temperature, taking an X-ray, and tranquilizing an animal. Then we met the registrar, who keeps track of all the animal records. At craft time, we remembered those X-rays by piecing together a candy skeleton. Some of us had an extra skeleton craft to do, too. |
|
Spiders
We took a walk around Safari World or near the KOA pavilion to look for spider webs. We also examined a tarantula shed and a dead black widow spider. We made a cool spider craft to take home, too. |
