Day Camp 2007 - Week 6

Monkey Monkey

Monkey
We met an education staff member, who led us in making enrichments for the squirrel monkeys and other primates. Then we met Yelena, a primate keeper, who told us all about the squirrel monkeys and how she takes care of them. She also gave them the enrichment we made for them, and we watched what they did with it. We later played a fun game and made a monkey craft.

Ostrich Ostrich

Ostrich
We met an education staff member to candle eggs and hold the baby chicks. Later, we met a wildlife staff member out on the preserve and we learned all about these non-flighted birds. Even though they cannot fly, they can run up to 40 m.p.h. We also made an ostrich craft and played a fun game.

Tortoise Tortoise

Tortoise
We met a keeper and helped to prepare the diets for the Aldabra tortoises. Then we met an education staff member who told us all about the red-footed tortoises and the African spurred tortoises. Each of us had our photo taken with a red-footed tortoise and made a frame for it during craft time. We also played a tortoise-themed game.

Vet Keeper
We met one of Lion Country Safari's veterinarians at the Animal Theatre, where she showed us some of the things that she does to help to keep the animals here healthy and safe. We viewed different X-rays and tried to identify the animal in each one; we learned how she tranquilizes some animals with a dart gun; and we used a special instrument that can listen to a turtle's heart beat. Later, we played a game and made a cool vet-related craft.

Fish
We met an education staff member, who taught us the different parts of a fish. We added fish puzzle pieces to a big fish body as we learned about each part. In addition, we played a cool survival game that taught us the role fish play in the food web. Then we fed the fish in the koi pond and native fish in Lake Shanalee. Later, we made a special fish craft, too.
