Day Camp 2008 - Week 1

Zebra
Zebra
Each group made a paper-mache zebra. On Tuesday morning, all of the groups went to the lion section before the lions were released and watched as the lions ran out and attacked each cardboard zebra. On our zebra day, we drove through the preserve and met one of the keepers, who talked to us about the zebras and showed us how to identify individual animals in the zebra herd. We made a special zebra craft and played a zebra game, too.

Hornbill
Hornbill
On bird day, we went to both hornbill exhibits, where a keeper talked to us about these interesting birds. We also got the opportunity to watch as the keeper fed the hornbills! An education staff member candled eggs with us, and we were able to hold the baby chicks that hatched this week. And we made a cool hornbill craft and played a hornbill game later that day.

Skink
Skink
We met Irwin, the blue-tongued skink in a special talk with the education department. Some of us were lucky enough to have our photo taken with this gentle reptile. Later, we made a skink craft and played a reptile game. And, if the weather cooperated, we also visited Safari Splash.

Primate Keeper
Primate Keeper
An education staff member taught us how to make enrichments for the chimps. Then, we drove out onto the preserve, where the keepers told us all about the chimpanzees here at Lion Country Safari and how they care for them. We watched them cross the bridge and get the enrichments that we made for them. In the afternoon, we made a primate craft and played a game.

Florida FLorida

Florida
Our nature day was centered on Florida animals, some of which we met with education staff at a special show at the Animal Theatre. Some of us even had our pictures taken with a Florida box turtle or a Florida kingsnake. Then, we did a scavenger hunt to see how many Florida animals we could find in Safari World. We made a Florida-themed craft, too.
