Day Camp 2008 - Week 8

Chimpanzee Chimpanzee

Chimpanzee
We learned all about chimpanzees on our mammal day. First, we met an education staff member who showed us how to make enrichments for these primates. Then, we took our enrichments to the preserve to give them to the primate keepers. The primate keepers told us all about the chimps and we were able to see the primates interacting with the enrichments. We also traced our hands onto a copy of a chimpanzee hand print to compare the size difference. We later played a game and made a chimp craft to take home.

The bird that we studied this week is the stork. We met the bird keeper at the marabou stork and yellow billed stork exhibit and learned all about these large African birds. We also met an education staff member to candle eggs and hold baby chicks. Later, we made a special stork craft and played a fun stork feeding game, too.

Snake Snake Talk

Snake
This week's reptile is the snake. We met an education staff member who told us all about these often misunderstood reptiles, and some of us had our photo taken with the Florida kingsnake. We also played a game and made a snake craft.

Tools of the Trade
This week's keeper day taught us about all of the tools that a keeper uses in his or her every day duties. In addition to cleaning tools such as rakes and brooms, keepers must also learn to use darting equipment; this is sometimes used to give medicine to the animals. We made a special keeper craft and played a training game, also.

Africa
For our habitat day, we learned about animals that live in Africa. We drove onto the preserve to look for African animals (Lion Country Safari has a lot of those!) and we later fed the giraffe at the Safari World giraffe feeding exhibit. Some of us had our photos taken there but we all had our photos taken with Rory-Lion Country Safari's mascot! We also played a game and made an African craft.
