Zebra
For our mammal day, we met one of the keepers,
who told us all about these equines, and we learned how to identify
specific zebras in the herd by looking at their photos in an ID book
and examining their stripe patterns. Each group also made a paper-maché
zebra as enrichments for the lions. We also played a zebra-themed
game and made a zebra craft to take home. |

Crane
Our bird day was a lot of fun! First, we met a
bird keeper near the giraffe feeding exhibit to learn about the East
African crowned cranes and to throw food to them. Next, we played
a game where we used chopsticks to try to pick up pretend food to
learn how cranes use their beaks to get their food. After that, we
took a ride on the Safari Queen boat to get close enough to the sarus
cranes to throw grapes for them to eat. And we met an education staff
member to candle chicken eggs and hold the baby chicks. We also played
a crane game and made a crane craft to take home. |

Tools
of the Trade
For our keeper day, we learned about some of the
many tools that keepers use in doing their jobs. These include: wheelbarrows,
ropes, nets, hoses, snake hooks, brooms, mops, rakes, darts, and darting
guns. We tried to lasso the wooden animals at the Animal Theatre and
to capture toy snakes with the snake hooks. We also played a game
such as "hose wars" or "wheelbarrow races" and
made a craft to remember our day as a zoo keeper. |

Florida
Our nature/habitat day was about our own state
animals. First, we went to a special "Florida Animals" show
at the Animal Theatre, where we learned about alligators, Florida
kingsnakes, iguanas, and Quaker parrots. After the show, we were able
to get close to some of the reptiles, and some of us had our photo
taken with the baby alligator or the kingsnake. We also went on a
scavenger hunt to look for Florida animals in Safari World, and we
made a special craft to take home. |
