Day Camp 2009 - Week 5

Antelope Antelope

Antelope
We met one of the Wildlife staff members who took us behind the scenes in the preserve and pointed out different antelope tracks. We also toured the preserve and tried to identify all of the various species of antelope. We made paper-mache antelope enrichments for the lions to tear up on Thursday morning. We also made a special antelope craft to take home.

Lory Lory

Lory
At the Lory Exhibit, we met an education staff member, who taught us about these colorful parrots. We also fed them their special nectar. Some of us had our photos taken with the lories. Later, we candled eggs with an education staff member and held the baby chicks. We made a special lory craft and played a bird game, too.

Tortoise Tortoise

Tortoise
We met a keeper and helped to prepare the diets for the Aldabra tortoises. Then we met an education staff member who told us all about the red-footed tortoises and the African spurred tortoises. Each of us had our photo taken with a red-footed tortoise and made a frame for it during craft time. We also played a tortoise-themed game.

Vet Vet

Vet Keeper
We met Lion Country Safari's veterinarian at the Animal Theatre, where she showed us some of the things that she does to help to keep the animals here healthy and safe. We viewed different X-rays and tried to identify the animal in each one; we learned how she tranquilizes some animals with a dart gun. We also learned how Lion Country Safari keeps its animal records on property and how the zookeepers identify individual animals. Later, we played a game and made a cool vet-related craft.

Fish Fish

Fish
We met an education staff member, who taught us the different parts of a fish. We added fish puzzle pieces to a big fish body as we learned about each part. In addition, we played a cool survival game that taught us the role fish play in the food web. Then we fed the fish in the koi pond and native fish in Lake Shanalee. Later, we made a special fish craft, too.
