Located in northern Mozambique, the Gorongosa
is one of Africa’s famous wildlife areas.
African Lion (Panthera leo)
Lions are distributed through much of Africa, south of the Sahara desert. Four feet high at the shoulder, up to 8 feet in length and weighing up to 550 lbs, they are the largest of the African carnivores. Lions live in family groups called prides which are usually made up of a core of related females and their offspring. One to five adult males dominate and protect the pride. The lion’s roar is a way of communicating and may be audible up to 5 miles away. Here at Lion Country Safari, our lions are kept in their very own preserve for an obvious reason: they are, after all, excellent hunters, and many of our other animal residents are the lion’s natural prey.
